Cosmetic Surgery Injury: Liability when looks go wrong

The boom in the sudden popularity of cosmetic surgery procedures; facial, Breast and Butt! is often linked to social media where young girls are constantly bombarded with “insta perfect” pictures of voluptuous celebrities. People’s Perception of beauty has changed dramatically over recent years thanks to social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat. However, sometimes things go wrong resulting in a Cosmetic Surgery Injury.

Although the majority of young girls are aware that the images they are seeing are highly filtered it has not prevented them from going to clinics and surgeons requesting that they are made to look like a version of their filtered selfies. Some experts believe that many young girls are suffering from “Snapchat dysmorphia” and this accounts for the sudden rise, not only in BBL but many other cosmetic procedures.

The Brazilian Butt Lift

The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is fast becoming one of the most popular cosmetic procedures worldwide. It involves harvesting fat from one area of the body and depositing it into the buttocks in order to obtain a more curvaceous figure.

The BBL is an extremely dangerous procedure, in fact in 2018 surgeons in the UK were asked to stop performing the procedure altogether until more information was available. This warning was given shortly before the death of a British woman in her 20’s as a result of undergoing this procedure.

Simon Withey, in an interview in 2018, stated “I think it is important that the message is reinforced: there is nowhere internationally where this is particularly perceived as a safe operation”.

Medical Risks of getting a Brazilian Butt lift

It seems young girls want results and they want them fast. They are not carrying out enough research and are easily drawn to clinics offering discounted prices and promotions. This has led to a massive increase in the amount of complaints relating to cosmetic surgery.

Mary O’Brien is an NHS Consultant Plastic Surgeon. She said “The problem is this is high volume fat, and if that fat ends up in a large vessel or vain that you are going to have in the buttock area, it can be carried to the heart and to the lungs, and that’s what cause the fatality”.  Some well documented risks of the Brazilian Butt lift are:

  • Bacterial Infection
  • Scarring
  • Tissue Dying
  • Wound Ruptures
  • Abbesses

The importance of research, an in depth consultation with an appropriate expert and looking into less invasive alternative methods cannot be stressed enough. Always ensure to ask your consultant about the possible risks and side effects of the procedure. If the consultant is not providing advance warning about the risks involved, you would be best served seeking the opinion of an alternative consultant.

Dangers Cosmetic Surgery Injury when Abroad

The Brazilian Butt Lift has not yet become readily available in Ireland, however. Many patients are drawn to the idea of travelling in order to have this procedure carried out but fail to take into account the complications that may arise when they get home.

Some common issues that patients have run into after travelling abroad and suffering a cosmetic surgery injury include, but are not limited to:

  1. The cosmetic surgeon is not readily available if something should go wrong;
  2. There is a serious lack of aftercare available;
  3. Very few consultants in Ireland are familiar with this procedure and will therefore not be best placed to assist, should something go wrong;
  4. If something goes wrong during the procedure, the patient can find themselves stuck in a foreign country, unable to travel home to friends and family;
  5. When travelling abroad for cosmetic surgery, many patients are not aware of the limited insurance cover that these foreign clinics have in place.
