Tackling bogus ‘slip and fall’ personal injury claims is one of the many innovative functions of an award winning IP installation at a shopping centre.
The installation at the Douglas Court Shopping Centre in Cork, Ireland, has won a ‘Best Security Solution’ award for Axis Communications, Milestone Systems and integrator RPC Consultants.
The partnership won the award at the European Retail Solutions Awards ceremony at London’s Old Billingsgate Market.
The integrated solution is used to fight crime, manage peak trading, demonstrate customer habits and ensure health and safety regulations are being observed – particularly reducing fraudulent ‘slip and fall’ personal injury claims.
All footage is stored for up to 150 days to enable centre managers to retrieve images of any ‘slip and fall’ incidents and consider claims objectively.
The project which uses 76 Axis Network Cameras takes in car parks, service corridors and the 59-unit shopping centre.
A range of dome and PTZ network cameras were selected by Axis partner, RPC Consultants.
Output images are viewable from, Milestone’s XProtect Enterprise video management system.
Retailers in the past would sometimes leave the service corridors blocked by stock deliveries and the legal requirement to stop this is now possible using 35 Axis network cameras installed to ensure emergency exits are kept clear.
Richard Cronin, director, RPC Consultants, said the installation was a blueprint for other centres and Johan Åkesson, business development director, retail sector, Axis Communications, said it demonstrated that IP surveillance “can deliver a genuine business impact to retailers and centre management.”
Glenn Fletcher, UK area sales manager, Milestone Systems, said the management recognised the potential for integrating analytics including ANPR, now offered in the XProtect open platform, which also supports facial recognition.
